Our Vacation in Nova Scotia – Part 2: Lunenburg and Bachman’s Beach

The day after we arrived in Nova Scotia, we drove to Lunenburg, which was about fifteen minutes from our Airbnb in Mahone Bay. This time the Apple CarPlay was worked so we used Rose’s navigation app on her iPhone to get us to there. It brought us twenty minutes away to the middle of nowhere and said we had reached our destination. I switched maps and used my Android phone to get us to the actual town of Lunenburg, which was another twenty minutes away, so our fifteen-minute trip took forty minutes.

We arrived just before eleven and park on a street in the downtown area. There was a parking meter that took coins, which is something I haven’t seen in a long time. I like the coin machines because if you leave early, the next person gets your extra minutes instead of the city or town. I put enough money in the meter to last until 3:30.

Rose shopped at several stores where she bought a number of trinkets. We then hung out at one of the piers for a while. The waterfront area is beautiful.

We ate lunch at a place whose called The Salt Shaker Deli and Inn. Rose had a personal Pizza and a soup. I had the same soup which was like a tomato and parmesan soup. I also had a beet salad. Everything was very tasty.

Lunenburg is a beautiful town, which is why I originally wanted to stay there, but we couldn’t find a place that had guaranteed parking. My wife didn’t like the uncertainty about whether we would have a place to park so we settled on a place in Mahone Bay. I’m glad we did. While Lunenburg is a nice town, it is a little busy for our tastes. Mahone Bay is big enough to have many things to do but small enough to feel laid back.

When we return to our Airbnb in Mahone Bay, we walked to a place called Amos pewter where Rose bought a number of items. We then went back to the room for a while before returning to that same pewter store. I didn’t look at the receipts, but I bet she spent between $700 and $800.

Afterwards we drove to a place about 20 minutes away called Bachman’s Beach. Rose wanted to look for sea glass and heard there were many places in Nova Scotia that were good for that. There was a sign on the beach that said it was on private land but there were about 15 to 20 people there. The sign said something like “Use at your own risk.” We had to drive down a very rural road to get to it. We didn’t find sea glass, despite it being a recommended beach for finding the glass. The water was very calm and probably didn’t have strong enough currents to pull sea glass up onto the beach.

While we were there, we saw a man get into the fridged water. He swam for five minutes, got out for two or three minutes and then reentered the water for another two minutes.

I asked Google what the water temperature was and it said between 4 and 5 degrees Celsius, which is about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s incredible. I don’t like getting into water that is below 80 degrees.

Later, after returning to Mahone Bay, we went to Mateus Bistro for dinner and we both got cheeseburgers. A salad was included which was also very good. It seems restaurants in the area know how to make good salads.
