On Wednesday morning, May 20, we drove from Mahone Bay to Hall’s Harbor in the Bay of Fundy. The Bay of Fundy has the largest tide swings on Earth, with an average swing of 40–50 feet between high and low tide. We timed our visit to coincide with low tide. Hall’s Harbor was one of many places we could have gone but it’s proximity to Mahone Bay made it a good starting point.
We left around 7:20 a.m. and arrived around 9:00 a.m. During the entire trip we saw no gas stations or convenience stores. We did see our first police vehicle since leaving the Halifax airport three days earlier. Crime must be very low outside of Halifax.
There wasn’t much at Halls Harbor except a couple of stores, a marina, and a seafood restaurant, which were all closed. We were also unsure where to park, so we pulled off to the side of the road where there were no signs prohibiting it. A car showed up a minute later and parked behind us. We were the only ones there.
After the long trip, I needed to pee, but there were no bathrooms except at the marina, but those were locked. Rose suggested I pee behind some building, but I didn’t want to do that. I figured I could hold it for a little while.
We stayed for fifteen or twenty minutes while I photographed the area. It was quite interesting to see boats resting on the bottom of an empty inlet.

From there we headed for a place called Wolfville, another area on the Bay of Fundy about 30 minutes away. We didn’t see a gas station until we were almost there, so we stopped and got gas, and I was finally able to use a bathroom.
Wolfville was in a town and there were far more people there that at Hall’s Harbor.

This place was different than Hall’s Harbor but equally interesting. If we wanted to get the full effect, we would have had to stay until high tide, but we had no interest in doing that.

We drove back to Mahone Bay a different way that was a little less rural. Along the way we saw from the highway areas where the water had disappeared with the tide.
We arrived back in town a little after noon. Rose wanted to find the pizza place that someone had mentioned. She thought it was called Betty’s but that was closed so we went to Ricardo’s Pizza but that was also closed. We couldn’t understand why so many businesses didn’t want to make money by being open.
We ended up back at the Naked Pearl. Rose wanted to sit inside because the outside seating was in the sun and it was warm outside, but I saw outside seating in the back of the restaurant that was in the shade and suggested that we sit there. That was a mistake because it was quite breezy and it got worse as time went on, but with some effort, we kept most everything on the table.
I ordered the Mediterranean salad, which I liked last time and a tomato soup. Rose ordered a Cesar salad, fries, and Brussel sprouts. We both couldn’t come close to finishing.

For dinner we went to Betty’s at the Kitch, which was now open. The pizza we ordered was a bit unusual but it was surprisingly good.

Next, I will write about our trip to Peggy’s Cove.
